Palm-lined avenues, clifftop villas and a walkable seafront. Ballito is the busy, sunlit centre of coastal life on the Dolphin Coast — smaller and more relaxed than Umhlanga, with more restaurants and energy than its quieter northern neighbours.
Why stay here
Ballito sits at the midpoint of the Dolphin Coast, close enough to King Shaka Airport for an easy transfer, yet far enough from Durban to feel like its own place. It's the busiest of the six coastal towns, with the highest concentration of restaurants, boutique shops and beachfront accommodation — but it's still small enough to walk end to end.
Around 200 bottlenose dolphins are seen in the waters here year-round, which is how the wider coastline earns its name. Whale sightings are common too, particularly during the winter migration months.

Getting around
Ballito is compact enough to walk between the beach, restaurants and shops in most areas. A car is useful for reaching Salt Rock, Shaka's Rock or Sheffield Beach for the day, and essential if you're booking a self-drive safari inland. Uber and Bolt both operate reliably in Ballito.
